Stop Them Switching to English on You
The free e-guide that shows you the 5 steps in how to start growing your confidence when speaking Dutch. Even when you're scared.
In this guide you'll discover:
-
Why you freeze in Dutch even though you can already do it: the three mechanisms in your head that hold you back in the moment (and why it has nothing to do with your vocabulary);
-
5 concrete steps to start speaking with more confidence, each with a small task you can do that very same day;
-
Practical Dutch phrases that keep a conversation from switching to English, so you stay in control.

Imagine if...
-
…you finally understood why the words vanish the moment it counts, and could feel that it's not a lack of talent, but something you can work on.
-
…you walked into your next small Dutch moment - the bakery, a quick question to a neighbour - with one simple phrase ready, instead of that flash of panic.
-
…a slip-up stopped feeling like proof that you "can't", and started feeling like no big deal.
-
…you ended your day thinking "today I tried", instead of "today they switched to English again".
This guide will get you going
In my years of teaching I've met so many internationals who already speak good Dutch, but don't dare to use it.
Often because they've had the same experience one too many times: they start a sentence, and the other person switches to English. Do that enough times and it quietly crushes your confidence, until you avoid speaking altogether.
Now, here's the thing I see again and again: they ask me for more grammar and more words, convinced that's what's missing, when what they actually need is the confidence to fall flat on their face and keep going. Because that's where it clicks.
You won't learn Dutch by trying to do it perfectly; you learn it by daring to use it, mistakes and all. That's exactly what this guide is about: not more grammar, but the mindset and the first practical steps to start speaking, today.

Joos is very engaged and patient when it comes to teaching the classes. She mixes up the teaching methods to keep it engaging and fun to participate.The classes have given me the confidence to finally speak some Dutch in my day-to-day.

Jouw lessen hebben me geholpen in een moeilijke periode die ik
in Nederland heb meegemaakt, en ze hebben me meer
vertrouwen gegeven in mezelf en in het leven dat ik hier aan het
vormgeven ben.

Joos is a wonderful teacher who is able to understand where I need help and adapt her lessons accordingly. I’d recommend her to any expat trying to learn Dutch.

Hoi! Ik ben Joos, docent Nederlands aan international en oprichter van Lingo Amsterdam.
I'm Joos Jonges, a Dutch teacher for internationals. I studied General Linguistics and earned my Master's cum laude in Leiden, specialising in second-language acquisition and the didactics of Dutch - exactly the science behind the "why you freeze" in this guide.
But I'm also a poet and performer, so I know from my own experience what it feels like to stand in the spotlight and have words you know perfectly well simply vanish.
Those two sides together, the linguistics and the stage, are precisely why I can tell you not only why you get stuck, but also how to get yourself out.
